Ernest Winstone - Died at Trentham Army Camp

Major Ernest Winstone, fifth son of George and Mary, was 33 years old, married and principal dental officer at Trentham Army Camp when he was struck down with cerebrospinal fever (meningococcal meningitis), which ultimately lead to his death on the 20th April 1918.

He received his dental degree at Pennsylvania University, starting his practice in Auckland before volunteering at the outbreak of WWI; starting out as a captain in the Avondale camp then being promoted to Major when he took charge at Trentham.

A little over a month after Ernest’s death, on the 31st May 1918, his widow Alice gave birth to their baby daughter Ernestine Alice in Devonport, Auckland. She also lost her sister Ruth later that same year on the 23rd of July, at the age of 27.

Alice later remarried and died in Wellington at the grand old age of 99 .
